Denver Artist Deborah Howard to be Featured in Upcoming Mizel Museum Programs

Well-known, Denver-based artist Deborah Howard will be the featured artist in two upcoming programs at the Mizel Museum, Denvers Jewish art, history and culture museum, located at 400 S. Kearney Street in Denver.

Howard will discuss her acclaimed collection of Holocaust survivor portraits and plans to expand the project during Salon Night: Gallery Talk with Artist Deborah Howard, Thursday, April 25, 5:30 p.m. The evening begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by a presentation and discussion at 6:00 p.m. Price is $12 for museum members; $16 for non-members.

On Sunday, April 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Howard will teach the popular workshop So You Think You Cant Draw?!?! As head of the painting program at University of Denver, Howard has had enormous success helping people learn to draw, even in a short period of time. During the workshop she helps students learn to see things in a new way while exploring line, negative space, perspective, drawing from nature and still life. The workshop is designed for beginners and for those looking to regain drawing skills. Price is $50 for museum members; $55 for non-members.

About Deborah Howard
Deborah Howard heads the painting program at the University of Denver. Her work has been exhibited at the Aspen Art Museum, Regis University in Denver, Arvada Arts Center, Peace Museum in Chicago, Tweed Museum in Duluth Minnesota, Contemporary Art Center in New Orleans and City College in New York. She received her bachelor of fine arts in drawing and printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design and her masters of fine art in painting and printmaking from the University of Wisconsin.

The Portraits of Child Holocaust Survivors series was started in 2003, sparked by a discussion with students on racial stereotypes and aging. I had finally found a way to deal with a subject of such magnitude through the simplicity of a drawn portrait, said Howard. She interviewed 25 people in Denver, Chicago and Los Angeles before drawing their portraits, which capture their humanity and depict very real people who have lived both extraordinary and ordinary lives.

Exodus Studios, an events production company, announced today that the tenth annual "Art Around Adams 2013: Ten Years on the Avenue!," a music and art walk extending over 2 miles on Adams Avenue is happening on June 1 from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.

A free and family-friendly event, Art Around Adams 2013: Ten Years on the Avenue! will showcase numerous visual and performance artists, stretching from Oregon street in Normal Heights to Vista street in Kensington. More than 100 businesses will change into art galleries and/or performance arenas for the day.

The event will kickoff at 2pm with introductions from Mayor Bob Filner, Council President Todd Gloria and other surprise guests, followed by meet & greets with them.

Some of the music acts you'll see are Hills Like Elephants, Okapi Sun, Black Sands, We Are Sirens, Josh Damigo, New Kinetics, Neon Cough, Scott Mathiasen, True Stories, Mad Traffic, Tolan Shaw, Pan Am, The Peripherals, Marie Haddad, Patric Petrie, amongst many more.

According to Rosen, Art Around Adams premiered in 2004 and has grown to generate over 20,000 attendees each year.

"Art has a long and strong history of bringing people together in San Diego County," said Supervisor Ron Roberts. "The Adams Avenue Community has the good fortune of being home to an established, interesting and thriving collection of artists and businesses. Art Around Adams helps display that to both locals and visitors alike."

"Art Around Adams is a great event, and I look forward to it every year," Council President Gloria said. "The Adams Avenue community is filled with music, art, and culture, and Art Around Adams brings all of that to the street for every San Diegan to enjoy."

A complimentary trolley featuring live stand-up comedy will shuttle guests along Adams Avenue. Thousands of dollars' worth of prizes will be given away. The prizes range from gift cards to vintage wine, all graciously donated from businesses in the Normal Heights/Kensington Communities. Sadigh Gallery aims to topple the popular misconception that collecting antiquities is an expensive hobby. All that is old is not expensive is a common slogan we use often at Sadigh Gallery, and it is a principle we adhere to in our business practices. Among our latest addition is a rare sandstone wall fragment from 18th Dynasty Egypt. This Sandstone carving depicts Amun, the Egyptian sky God who came to be regarded as a sun God and the head of the Egyptian pantheon. Amun is seen here with a chin beard and wearing a flat headdress with the Uraeus cobra symbol in the front. Around him are a cartouche and various Egyptian symbols and hieroglyphs.

Another rare piece, in our recent acquisition, is an Egyptian mummy mask again from the 18th Dynasty. In ancient Egypt, fine linen was used to wrap the head and neck of a mummy. They had religious significance and were intended to help the dead move from the mortal to the immortal world and to protect the physical body from harm.

Sadigh Gallery has also acquired a sizable collection of scarabs. Scarabs were once placed on the throat, chest, or heart of the Mummy. Some were worn by the deceased on a necklace, or mounted in gold settings as a pectoral. Heart scarabs provided the bearer with the assurance that at the final judgment as depicted in the Book of the Dead, the bearer would be found True of Voice and accepted into the eternal afterlife by the God Osiris.

There is also beautiful ancient jewelry such as the very ornate and exquisite 22kt gold filigree bird pendant, from Persia, with decorative details on the body and tail. Also, there are various rings, amulets, plaques, statues, figurines laden with various Egyptian symbols such as ankhs and the eye of Horus and depicting various ancient Egyptian gods such as Isis, Nefertum, Anubis, Osiris and so much more.

Reflecting on the euphoric London 2012 Olympic Games, the Museum of London has opened a new exhibition exactly 200 days after the Paralympic Closing Ceremony. The free event displays around 70 objects, costumes and personal accounts from last year's Games, including Tom Daley's memorable Union Jack trunks and Bradley Wiggins' yellow jersey.

A further new opening this week is the Tower Bridge Exhibition: This is London. Running for an entire year, the family-friendly exhibition displays 29 large scale images from Mirozlav Sasek's classic children's book. Life is Beautiful Festival Announces Inaugural Dates

The Life is Beautiful (L.I.B.) festival has announced Saturday, October 26th and Sunday, October 27th, 2013 as the dates of its first event. L.I.B hopes to attract thousands of people to enjoy live music performances, culinary demonstrations, art exhibitions and speaker forums in existing and temporary venues erected across more than 10 city blocks in and around the Fremont East District of Downtown Las Vegas.

We are assembling an unprecedented lineup of musicians, chefs, artists and speakers to entertain, engage and encourage festival goers all within a historic urban environment, says Rehan Choudhry, CEO of Aurelian Marketing Group. We want the convergence of entertainment and ideas that weekend to inspire people to find the beauty in life.

Music is Beautiful
Over the course of the two days, the festival will feature an eclectic lineup of internationally established and emerging bands on four outdoor stages and several indoor venues. The full music lineup will be announced in the coming weeks.

Verismo Opera will present a double bill of Giacomo Puccini's dark comedy Gianni Schicchi and Ruggero Leoncavallo's tale of an actor's jealous passions and the tragic consequences in I Pagliacci on Sunday, April 21, 3:00 p.m., at the Bergen Performing Arts Center (bergenPAC), 30 North Van Brunt Street, in Englewood, New Jersey.

Under Artistic Director Lucine Amara, one of the Metropolitan Opera's luminary performers, Verismo Opera will present the one-act operas fully staged with a live orchestra. "Tired of 'modernism'? Want to see period costumes and sets along with great acting and singing? Join us for our lavish productions of Gianni Schicchi and I Pagliacci. If you miss them, you'll be sorry," said Amara.

Verismo Opera's Stage Director/General Manager Evelyn La Quaif directs the new productions. For the first time, Chorus Director Mara Waldman will conduct the company's orchestra in its premiere of Gianni Schicchi. Internationally renowned Principal Conductor/Music Director Anthony Morss will conduct I Pagliacci.

"In these productions, Verismo Opera depicts verismo in its purest form, showing the savagery of the people during this violent era. With all the antics in Gianni Schicchi, I dare you to keep a straight face! The performances are so real, you won't want the curtain to close," said La Quaif.

The performances will be sung in Italian with English supertitles. A complete cast will perform in period costumes designed by Bergen County costumers Catherine Mirabella and Barbara Konig.

About NJ Association of Verismo Opera

The NJ Association of Verismo Opera has been a part of the New Jersey music scene since 1989. The opera company, a nonprofit organization based in Fort Lee, New Jersey, provides performing opportunities for young musicians and artists. Verismo Opera sponsors an annual vocal competition held in November with finals generally conducted at The Liederkrantz Foundation, drawing artists from all over the United States, Canada, and Europe. The company organizes opera workshops and offers affordable, highly professional operatic productions to the community.
