L. Ron Hubbard's Writers and Illustrators of the Future contest winners come from a variety of backgrounds and ages in 2013

This quarter's contest winners, upon analysis of all entries are just as diverse as any previous quarter of the contest, with a chemistry teacher from California, a housewife from Colorado, a real estate agent from Wisconsin and three art students in illustration, and they range in age from 17 years to 54 years of age. This simply proves the point, anyone with writing talent can enter and win.

This vehicle for supporting budding authors is the free-to-enter global contest called L. Ron Hubbard's Writers of the Future, now in its 30th year. Created by best-selling author L. Ron Hubbard, the merit-based Writers of the Future Contest was initiated to discover and encourage talented beginning writers of science fiction and fantasy. Quarterly winners of the Contest appear in the best-selling annual anthology, receive cash prizes, and attend an all-expenses paid gala awards ceremony and writing workshop. A sister contest, Illustrators of the Future was formed five years later and gives the same career launch for new illustrators.

Contest judge and lead workshop instructor for the writers contest and author of On Stranger Tides, Tim Powers, says to winners every year "don't quit your day job. Keep at it whenever you can, and your passion for writing will guide you through, evenings, weekends, whenever you can."

Cliff Nielsen, the illustrator lead workshop instructor for the illustrators side of the contest says something similar to his workshop. "Try to get a job in any aspect of the field of arts when you are starting out. You then won't get disassociated with the field while you hone your craft and send out your work."

DFW Elite Toy Museum Hosts Pre Grand Opening Party for Salesman Sample Exhibit to Help Dog Rescue

On Tuesday July 16, DFW Elite Toy Museum will hold a Grand Opening party to unveil its latest exhibit of Salesman Samples, featuring a working demonstrator model of a late 19th century Adams Road Grader that was appraised on an episode of Antiques Road Show as well as many other antique sales presentation models and patent models.

"Very often salesman samples were used to demonstrate large-scale equipment that it was not easy to transport," said DFW Museum owner Ron Sturgeon. "Imagine trying to explain a folding attic stair or show prospects how a hay baler or road grader works without a working scale model," said Sturgeon.

"We are very lucky to have had the chance to acquire the Adams Road Grader sample with its case shortly after it was on Antiques Road Show," said Rodney Ross, museum curator. "It is a spectacular model in near mint condition that has appraised over ten thousand dollars."

The event will be on Tuesday, July 16 from 530-8:30 pm at DFW Elite Toy Museum, 5940 Eden Drive in Fort Worth and dress is casual. The event is a fundraiser for Cavalier Rescue, and guests will be asked to make a $10 donation at the door to help fund this breed-specific dog rescue.

DFW Elite Toy Museum has a 300-piece collection of antique toys, rare scale models, and one-of-a-kind auto memorabilia. The museum is pet-friendly, public, and admission is free. The exhibit will run through August 31.

"Anyone who visits DFW Elite Toy Museum will notice two things: Ron's love of cars and his love of dogs," Ross said. "We're excited about the event and hoping for a great turnout to help a worthy cause."

Atlanta Fine Artist Corey Barksdale Creates A Striking Mural Painting That Captures a Multi-Cultural Environment for the International Community School

You know what makes a child so extraordinary? Everything. Every face has a worldview. The same holds true for art in any form. The bold wisdom found in graphic street art is a sublime method in which to bring this beauty into the public domain. Atlanta artist Corey Barksdale presents his craft, while breathing confidence into the pure, raw essentials of youthful visions. There is a striking silence and rich drumbeat found in this dynamic creative expression. The smallest details show the supreme skill and style through the core of the mural. Filled with strokes and spheres fusing the imagination and the cooperation of possibilities.

The symbiotic passage of light through the visage illuminates a beam effect that seems to gild the center of a soul. Humanity in a symbolic gathering filled with a confident color wheel cast upon brick and mortar. This palette's design is redolent. It presents a central cast upon a borderless canvas depicting a scene of important aspects of existence and invites every child to join together in the crusade to safeguard growth through their hearts and minds. Change begins with their stories.

Barksdale applies a detailed multi-dimensional technique filled with soulful steps. It is aesthetic, as well as communal. The background is an inherent quality of the work. The intricately arranged patterns form an honorable freedom within an appealing blend. There is a social commentary in terms of placement, which enhances the school's vision of advancing the assurance of common understanding. The proportions imply varied stories that we can imagine from one's journey. At its center, the faces are filled with the wholesome essentials of an authentic investment in the community's future.

We are invited in with colorful originality, as the atmosphere eternally links us. I believe the visual impact commands a presence projecting the school's vision by defining an unbiased path for all children who walk through the doors. The placement of images endorses the sentiment that as long as we hold our heads up, we can see a better future. A unique opportunity to expand our own register of ideas.

The images come to life on Barksdale's mural because there is still so much to learn. A great reminder presented, in that art should be a totally normal extension of our lives. An authentic investment in the community symbolizes stability and invokes the creative minds for all generations. The brilliant strokes center upon persistence and endurance. This welcome sign lets the children know that we see them, we hear them and we honor their presence.

There is a curious, inspirational imagination bigger than us. Bright-eyed faces engaging with the merits found inside the fabric of the school reflecting a one to one relationship between the artist and the observer. The gallant piece encapsulates the belief in allowing everyone to be more essential, more personal, and more unique because it only takes one spark to make a difference within a village of people.

The artist's execution celebrates understanding and projects the courageous, vibrant call found within our spirits. Mural art is an open-ended interpretation of authenticity. Convergence is key, in art and in people. Social truth continues to unfold through the gentle care, love and strength of Mother Earth and her inhabitants.

The Singers' Cabaret Workshop: Develop Your Cabaret Persona

What does it take to be a cabaret artiste?
The Singers' Cabaret Workshop develops singers' cabaret skills

Campaigns for cabaret to be recognised as a genre began in 2006, spearheaded by artists Paul L Martin, Sarah-Louise Young, Dusty Limits and Time Out journalists Simone Baird and Ben Walters. In 2012, Frisky and Mannish led Cabariot, a movement sparked by Gary Barlow's use of "too cabaret" as a derogatory comment on the X Factor.

So what is cabaret and what are its demands on the performer?

The Singers' Cabaret Workshop, taught by founder of the London Cabaret Awards Paul L Martin and vocal coach Jamie Anderson, runs from the 20th to 30th of August 2013. Designed for professional singers, the course develops each participant's cabaret persona to help them conquer the hazardous stages of the cabaret circuit.

The Singers' Cabaret Workshop is a two-week course run by leading cabaret artistes Paul L Martin (founder of the London Cabaret Awards and Excess All Areas entertainment agency) and Jamie Anderson (vocal coach at Musical Theatre Academy; vocal director of 1916 - The Musical)

Acclaimed performer and writer Sarah-Louise Young (guest soprano in Fascinating Ada; award-winning creator of Cabaret Whore! and Cabaret Whore Encore!) will teach a guest workshop in clowning

The only course of its kind in the UK, the Singers' Cabaret Workshop is a unique opportunity to be mentored by top UK cabaret practitioners to craft a totally individual cabaret set and persona. The course culminates in a showcase performance for invited industry professionals offering the rare opportunity for participants to demonstrate their newly-developed skills in front of leading professionals in the cabaret field.

The Singers' Cabaret Workshop will take place at The Poor School (242 Pentonville Rd, London N1 9JY) and the industry showcase will take place on Friday 30 August at historic cabaret venue The Pheasantry (152 Kings Road, London, SW3 4UT).

BrightSpring Announces New Non-Stick Silicone Baking Mat

Exactly what do you hate about baking? Burnt edges, fiddly parchment paper, scrubbing your pans?

Exactly what do you LOVE about baking? Stunning scents filling your house, the joy of seeing your kids faces light up at the sight of fresh-baked cookies, the fulfillment of honest home-made food?

A BrightSpring silicone baking mat will allow you to enjoy all the pleasures satisfactions of cooking without the inconvenience.

The robust silicone-coated fiberglass design means it can be utilized again and again, making it far more economical than parchment paper. The non-stick surface enables food to slide off easily and when you are done, just wipe it clean with soapy water.

According to a BrightSpring representative, "Silicone is quickly becoming an essential kitchen area necessity. While conventional non-stick may appear good enough, it can be harmed quickly and is never quite as non-stick as you think! We have all been left sweating over burnt-on grease that you just cannot scrub or soak off your favored pan. The silicone-coated fiberglass design of the BrightSpring baking mat makes it resilient, flexible and completely multi-functional".

And a silicone baking mat isn't just kind to your wallet; it's good to your heart too. As there is no need to grease pans, you can leave all that oil out of your dish creating healthier eating without compromising on flavor.

Obviously, cookies are not the only thing that these mats can be used for. The mat is safe for freezing, microwaves and toaster ovens as well as your conventional oven. Cook any sweet or savory dish on it, make candy on it, or knead dough on it.

"It makes baking simple. The BrightSpring baking mat is not just another meaningless kitchen gadget, when you have one you'll quickly wonder how you ever survived without it. It'll become a household essential" In fact, BrightSpring is convinced that this product will quickly become a staple item in practically everybody's household.

A company representative states that "The BrightSpring baking mat is ideal for so much more than baking cookies. Forget flouring surfaces, forget fiddly parchment paper. Forget all that dull washing up!".

Baking is a true art to those who enjoy it, however sadly that art can come with all kinds of headaches that you 'd rather forget when you are in your element in the kitchen. BrightSprings non-stick baking mat will help baking to truly become a family affair once again, with everybody looking forward to coming home to the smell of fresh cookies.
