BALAM Dance Theatre to Perform Ramayana: Kecak for the Catskill Mountains in Hunter, New York Residency

BALAM Dance Theatre (BALAM) will present Ramayana: Kecak for the Catskill Mountains in the Mountain Top Summer Residency Performance, a summer enrichment program presented by the Catskill Mountain Foundation in Hunter, New York from July 1-12. BALAM, a New York City-based ensemble dance company, will offer a workshop inspired by the Balinese Kecak, the monkey chant, for children from the communities of Hunter and Tannersville, New York.

The culmination of the company's residency will be a performance with the children in vibrant costumes of BALAM's signature work, Ramayana: Abduction of Sita, on Friday, July 12 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Hunter Elementary School in Hunter, New York. The performance is free and open to the public. BALAM's residency is supported in part by the Puffin Foundation Ltd. and the Catskill Mountain Foundation.

A highlight of the performance will be the children's Kecak, a vocal chorus of accented sounds that emulate the polyrhythmic layers of gamelan music associated with Balinese dance and the beloved character Hanuman, the monkey king. The children will also create and perform other fantasy masked animal characters in the production.

BALAM will present an eight-day Balinese dance and vocal workshop inspired by the Balinese Kecak. Thirty elementary school children will receive lessons drawn upon stories from the Hindu epic Ramayana and be introduced to a daily warm-up based on karate katas, Balinese dance, vocal chants and their supporting body movements, and Balinese mask work. Throughout the workshop, the New York State Board of Education's arts guidelines will be followed, and the children will create their own choreographic segments.

New Wakasa Chopsticks Showcases Japan's Traditional Chopstick Art

Everything Chopsticks has just added a new style of Wakasa chopsticks to their selection of special Japanese artisan chopsticks. The new chopstick is the Nasu Red layered lacquered chopsticks.

The Nasu Red Wakasa chopsticks feature bright red base layers of lacquer, followed by several alternating layers of cream and gold lacquer, finished with layers of black. The colored layers are exposed through carving and polishing, revealing their decorative contrast and beauty.

Wakasa chopsticks are an ancient form of chopstick design and manufacturing originating in the small city of Obama, Japan which sits along Wakasa Bay. The Wakasa style replicates images of the ocean seafloor viewed through the crystal clear waters of the bay.

Elegant Wakasa chopsticks have been made in Fukui prefecture, Japan since the Edo period (1603-1868). Craftsmen apply multiple layers of lacquer to each chopstick and may also incorporate small pieces of shell or mother of pearl. Frequently the lacquer coatings are carved in order to expose the layers.

Carving also determines the final shape of the chopstick. The chopstick is then polished to bring out the beauty and colors of the lacquering. These painstaking processes take several weeks to a couple months to complete. Truly every pair is a work of art.

Wakasa is becoming a rare artisan trade. In the mid 1800's there were over 300 family shops in Obama practicing this lacquer technique. Today there are just 9 shops remaining.

The new Nasu Red Wakasa chopsticks are available at EverythingChopsticks.com. There are eleven models of Wakasa chopsticks ranging in price from $10-$30. Styles include the popular Bijin, Daikan and Kai.

About Everything Chopsticks
Everything Chopsticks (http://EverythingChopsticks.com) has been a leading provider of chopsticks since 2005, specializing in quality chopsticks from Asian cultures around the world.

Hosted at the NEC, Saturday 1 Tuesday 4 March 2014.

This new consumer and professional event will combine highly interactive features to entertain and engage consumers, with dedicated conferences and events for the trade and retailer attendees. The Photography Show will be a must-visit event for amateurs, professionals and retailers.

Future is the worlds leading publisher of photography magazines, with an amazing portfolio of successful brands online, on mobile and in print. Practical Photoshop is the UKs best-selling Photoshop magazine. N-Photo and PhotoPlus are the worlds best-selling Nikon and Canon magazines respectively. Futures photography brands reach more than one million enthusiasts each month and our photography websites deliver more than 2.5 million page impressions.

The Photography Show will bring all this experience and enthusiasm to life for the UKs growing audience of amateur photographers, with some of the biggest names in the industry unlocking the secrets of their craft. The show floor itself will be brimming with hundreds of exhibitors, the very latest kit and accessories, and an array of interactive opportunities to get involved. A full-spec studio suite will also be created on-site for visitors wanting to get hands-on in a professional environment, and themed areas including a Wildflower Garden will be specially created to ensure all subject interests are fully catered for. More activities will be announced in coming months, including details of a major gallery exhibition.

Futures Head of Photography Matthew Pierce says: The imaging industry is evolving at speed and we believe there is a real opportunity to create a dynamic and inclusive event with photography at its core which will deliver a broad audience of imaging enthusiasts. Future has a world-leading, multi-award-winning portfolio of photography brands and is recognised internationally for its innovation. The Photography Show will be another example of that.

The Photography Show will be supported by a major six-figure marketing campaign, including targeting Futures own leading technology brands T3 and TechRadar.com, which, as the UKs biggest tech review site, reaches over four million tech enthusiasts every month.

Futures Head of Events Jonny Sullens adds: The Photography Show is a great example of Future unlocking the potential of its market leading brands. I am really excited at the prospect of bringing such an innovative and exciting market to life over four days at the NEC.

The UK photographic industry has already reacted with enthusiastic support:

BPI News Publisher Clive Insley says: The launch of the Photography Show is great news for the entire imaging industry. A national UK photo show in March at the NEC is the vital springboard needed by the trade to launch the latest products and services to thousands of their customers. For professional photographers and enthusiasts its the focal point for everything photographic under one roof at the right venue and at the right time of year.

Royal Photographic Society Director General Dr Michael Pritchard adds: The RPS is delighted that Future has launched the Photography Show at the NEC as the industry needs an annual showcase to promote itself. Future has some ambitious plans and the RPS will be supporting them.

Adobe Principal Solutions Consultant Richard Curtis says: The UK photographic market is an important part of the creative industries, so its good news that Future has stepped in to lead a replacement for the already successful Focus on Imaging show at the NEC.

The Flash Centre Managing Director Chris Whittle adds: Focus on Imaging was the right show, in the right place and at the right time so we are pleased that Future has launched The Photography Show at the NEC in March 2014.

PMA Director of UK Activities Nigel McNaught adds: The photo industry needs a showcase for its products and services and I am delighted to learn that the new event from Future will be very hands on combining demonstrations with education sessions. PMA is pleased to support this initiative.

DPR Korea: UN adds ancient city of Kaesong to its World Heritage list

The ancient city of Kaesong located in what is now the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea has today been granted World Heritage status as the United Nations continues its review of dozens of natural and cultural wonders around the world.

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO) World Heritage Committee today approved the bid at its ongoing meeting in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, noting the site embodied the political, cultural, philosophical and spiritual values of a crucial era in the regions history.

Kaesong city consists of 12 separate components ranging from palaces to an astronomical and meteorological observatory and defensive walls that integrate Buddhist, Confucian, Taoist and geomantic concepts. Taken together, these testify to the history and culture of the Koryo Dynasty, which ruled from 918 to 1392 and unified the various states which had inhabited the Peninsula, the Committee said.

The ancient city is the countrys second World Heritage site after the Complex of Koguryo Tombs in Pyongyang, listed in 2004.

Also today, the Committee selected the ancient city of Tauric Chersonese founded by the Dorian Greeks in the 5th century BC on the northern shores of the Black Sea in Ukraine. The site encompasses six urban areas and hundreds of chora, rectangular plots of equal size, which the UN agency said is an outstanding example of democratic land organization linked to an ancient polis.

The choras supported vineyard cultivation. In the 3rd century AD, the city was the top wine producer of the Black Sea and served as a hub for the Greek, Roman and Byzantine Empires, and populations north of the Black Sea. The city thrived until the 15th century and is known as the Ukrainian Pompeii.

The towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum and their associated villas, preserved when Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD in Italy, have been a World Heritage site since 1997.

Adding to Italys World Heritage sites, the Committee today honoured the twelve villas and two pleasure gardens spread across the Tuscan countryside once belonging to the Medicis. The family greatly influenced modern European culture through its patronage. Built between the 15th and 17th centuries, the villas represent an innovative system of rural construction in harmony with nature and dedicated to leisure, the arts and knowledge and form the first example of the connection between habitat, gardens, and the environment, which helped develop the appreciation of landscape characteristic of Humanism and the Renaissance, the Committee said.

In Iran, the Committee honoured the Golestan Palace which represents a new style incorporating traditional Persian arts and crafts and elements of 18th century architecture and technology. The lavish structure is considered a masterpiece of the Qajar, whose family came into power in 1779 and made Tehran the capital of the country.

The Committee also selected for inclusion the Bergpark Wilhelmshhe, a park in Kessel, Germany, begun by Landgrave Carl of Hesse-Kassel in 1689.

The great size of the park and its waterworks along with the towering Hercules statue constitute an expression of the ideals of absolutist Monarchy while the ensemble is a remarkable testimony to the aesthetics of the Baroque and Romantic periods, UNESCO had said in approving its bid.

The UN agency also approved an extension today of the Bochnia Royal Salt Mines to the Polish Wieliczka Salt Mines inscribed to the World Heritage List in 1978, creating the Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines. The rock salt deposit in Wieliczka-Bochnia has been mined since the 13th century and is the oldest of its type in Europe. The site includes altars and statues sculpted in the salt, making what the Committee called a fascinating pilgrimage into the past of a major industrial undertaking that developed over 700 years.

The Committee, meeting since 16 June in Cambodia, is reviewing 32 proposed sites and reviewing several already on the list. It is due to wrap up its work this week.
